Career Aspirations
My ultimate goal is to work in disease research and treatment development. Through my coursework and research experiences at Mount Union, I believe I have been given the tools I need to expand upon my research interests in graduate school. Being a double major in two very different fields of study is difficult, but through studying in these fields, I have realized how much they both influence each other. My neuroscience background has helped me to better understand neural networks, and my data science background has helped me to better understand how to conduct research and how to understand research outcomes more easily. So while it has been difficult, it has been worth it, especially since I get to spend everyday studying with and working with my favorite people in the world!
Why Mount Union?
My grandpa was always the biggest fan of the Purple Raiders, so I kind of grew up around Mount Union! My aunt and uncle met here, my older brother, and two people I grew up on the swim team with also studied here, so when it came time for me to look at colleges and universities, Mount Union was the obvious choice! After speaking to the professors, it became clear to me that Mount Union was my home! Anything and everything I do with any one of my sorority sisters will instantly brighten my day. I never thought I would be in a sorority, but I couldn’t be more grateful for the women I have met through Delta Sigma Tau. We truly are a sisterhood like no other. Being a part of the Greek community has also allowed me to become closer with people in other sororities and fraternities, and it has truly been so incredible to serve them, the Mount Union, and the Alliance community through Greek Life.
Experiental Learning Opportunities
Last fall, I had the amazing opportunity to have an internship at the Stark County Board of Developmental Disabilities. I got to work with the most amazing supervisors and had the best coworkers. It was a really emotionally challenging internship, as I was exposed to many different kinds of families and kids who had a wide range of disabilities. As hard as it was, I will be eternally grateful that I worked there. It truly changed my perspective and my life for the better. This past summer, I had an internship as part of the Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence where I was able to create a machine learning algorithm that would predict the best properties of superconductive materials! It was hard, but such an amazing experience, and I couldn’t be more grateful to have been a part of it! I had a second summer internship where I was able to help some of my professors run a science coding camp! I have also had the opportunity to be a teaching assistant for the introductory data science course! Getting to teach other students about a subject I grew to love has been so much fun, as it has helped me grow as a student in teaching me how to explain graphs and analyses and the way to conduct them to other people, which is a crucial skill for data scientists!
