Mount Union Holds Special Student-Athlete Commencement in Response to Season Successes

May 12, 2025

ALLIANCE — Following its 179th annual Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 10, the University of Mount Union held a special Commencement Ceremony honoring its student-athlete graduates.

The event was created because several of its spring athletic teams reached their respective postseason tournaments, preventing them from attending the May 10 Commencement. These teams included baseball, softball, women’s golf and women’s lacrosse.

Following the traditional Commencement proceedings, Mount Union Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. William Cunion welcomed the graduates and their families at each ceremony. Following Cunion, University President Greg King ’89 offered remarks to honor the student-athletes.

“This spring, your teams experienced outstanding success, and as a result, had an opportunity to represent the University of Mount Union in postseason play. I know this was very exciting for you, yet it was likely a bit bittersweet as you were competing while our regularly scheduled Commencement ceremonies were taking place,” King said. “We are pleased to be able to afford you the opportunity to cross the stage and receive the degrees you have earned this morning while allowing you to remain committed to the athletic teams that have been a significant part of your Mount Union experience.”
