Research in College
I've had the opportunity to conduct research in psychology as a student. My favorite project, by far is about how an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting works. I attended a meeting, observed the structure, and reflected on how the group setting and support system help with recovery. It was a really eye opening experience and helped me better understand addiction from a psychological and human perspective. Projects like this one are helping me build skills necessary to become a cognitive behavioral therapist.
Overcoming Obstacles
One obstacle I’ve had to overcome was adjusting to a new environment away from home. It was tough at first being in a completely different place, but over time, I found support through friends, staff, and getting involved on campus. It taught me how to be more independent and confident in myself.
Finding a Home away from Home
Mount feels like a second home to me because of how friendly people are. From the moment you step on campus, everyone is welcoming and it's easy to feel like you're part of something. The biggest impact on my UMU experience has been from Dawn Daugherty. She’s been like a second mom to me here. Always checking in, giving advice, taking us on shopping trips, and just making sure we’re okay. Her support has made being away from home so much easier. We love mama Dawn!
