Department of Performing Arts Presents “The Haber Conundrum” February 4

January 14, 2026

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The University of Mount Union Department of Performing Arts in partnership with the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics and the Peacebuilding and Social Justice program will present “The Haber Conundrum” on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. in Presser Recital Hall of Cope Music Hall.

“The Haber Conundrum” explores the life of Fritz Haber, the Nobel Prize–winning chemist whose breakthrough in synthetic fertilizer transformed global agriculture and helped sustain billions of lives. Yet Haber is also known as the father of chemical warfare for his development of chlorine gas during World War I. His research later contributed to the creation of Zyklon B, the agent used to murder more than one million people in Nazi concentration camps.

The play was written and will be performed by David Kaye, a Fulbright Scholar and Professor of Theatre at the University of New Hampshire. The play was first performed at the Washington, DC Capital Fringe in 2024, with Broadway World’s David Friscic saying, “The acting, writing, (and the inherent moral questions that are raised) by Mr. David Kaye make this a ‘must see’ event.” Kaye’s work as an actor, director, and playwright has been seen on stages in New England, Montreal, Scotland and Israel. In 2025, David directed “The Tempest“ for Shakespeare At The Castle.

There will be a post-show talkback featuring Kaye; Dr. Scott Mason, professor of biochemistry and chemistry; and Dr. Niki Johnson, professor of philosophy and religious studies.

This event is free and open to the public, although tickets are required. Tickets are available by visiting mountunion.edu/boxoffice.
