First Class of Mount Union Second-Degree Accelerated Nursing Students Participates in Pinning Ceremony

August 25, 2020

MINERVA, Ohio — The University of Mount Union’s second-degree accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program held its first pinning ceremony for its Class of 2020 graduates.

Six students were recognized at the event, held at the Mount Union Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center.

  • Caitlin Connor of East Liverpool, Ohio
  • Annie Conway of Alliance, Ohio
  • Alyssa Hatton of Alliance, Ohio
  • Kira Nicholson of Canton, Ohio
  • Tia Swallow of Canton, Ohio
  • Chelsea West of Sugarcreek, Ohio

“The pin you are receiving today features the University of Mount Union’s symbol and the purple Raider color,” said Dr. Betty Allen, assistant professor and assistant director of nursing at Mount Union. “The humble oil lamp is shown on top of an open book. I view it as a reminder to continue to seek knowledge and wisdom. The University’s motto “Sit Lux”, in Latin means “Let your light shine.” As you serve patients in hospitals and communities, you will have an opportunity – unique to the role of the nurse – to bring light in the midst of suffering, shine light on best practices and be light to those around you. “

Following the ceremony, the students and faculty joined in reciting the Nightingale Oath, which served as an acceptance of all duties and responsibilities associated with the nursing profession.
