Mount Union Prepares for 22nd Annual Day of Service

January 11, 2018

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The University of Mount Union Regula Center for Public Service and Civic Engagement is seeking community volunteers for the upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 15.

This marks the 22nd year for Mount Union’s MLK Day celebrations, with service projects being the primary component each year. The MLK Day of Service began in 2010 with approximately 100 volunteers and grew to more than 500 volunteers in 2016. The number of community partners participating has increased from 11 in 2010 to more than 25 last year. The event has become Mount Union’s largest service project and a signature event of the Regula Center.

Volunteer locations for this year’s event include Alliance Community Pantry, Rodman Public Library, Alliance Area Domestic Violence Shelter, Danbury Senior Living, Hartville Thrift Shoppe and Beech Creek Botanical Garden. Jobs may entail duties such as cleaning, painting, crafting and organizing. Additionally, multiple on-campus projects will take place and all items will be donated to local charities.

Volunteers are asked to register by visiting www.mountunion.edu/regula-events.

Each participant will be able to preference the locations at which they want to volunteer. In order to plan accordingly, pre-registration is necessary. Volunteers will be able to sign up the morning of the event, however location and T-shirt preferences can’t be guaranteed.

The MLK Day of Service volunteers can check in at the University’s Peterson Field House beginning at 8:15 a.m., where they will receive a location assignment, T-shirt and lunch ticket. All participants will depart for their locations by 9 a.m. and return to campus between noon and 1 p.m. Volunteers are invited to stay for lunch in the Mount Union Kresge Dining Commons located in the Hoover-Price Campus Center.
