Mount Union Civil Engineering Students, Faculty Attend “Constructor for a Day” Program

October 29, 2019

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Students and faculty in the University of Mount Union’s civil engineering program had the opportunity to attend the 29th Annual College “Rich DiGeronimo Constructor for a Day” program, sponsored by the Cleveland chapter of the Ohio Contractors Association (OCA), which led to job and internship opportunities.

This program provides an opportunity for college students majoring in civil engineering or construction to see first-hand practical applications in their field of learning by touring local job sites and facilities. Mount Union has participated in the program the past two years. A total of 14 companies and students from more than 10 universities attended the 2019 event.

The group of students was led by Dr. Xi Wang, assistant professor of civil engineering at Mount Union. This incredible opportunity assisted in Mount Union students earning internship opportunities and job offers from the event.

Grant Holcomb ’20, a civil engineering major of Sterling, Ohio, Julia Chen ’20, a civil engineering major of Alliance, Ohio and Allan Benson ’20, a civil engineering major of Spencer, Ohio, attended the event this year.

“We had the opportunity to interact directly with project managers, executives and recruiters as we toured active construction sites, asked questions and learned more about the individual companies,” Chen said. “Later, there was a small job fair where we could have informal interviews, get advice on what we should be looking for in future internships/jobs and network for the future.”

The event provides students with a great opportunity to gain some practical experience and communicate with people in the industry.
