November 06, 2018

NEW YORK, NY – University of Mount Union physics major Joseph Winiecki ’18, of Stow, Ohio, was selected to participate in the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship program, developed by the United States Department of Energy.

Winiecki will travel to Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in New York where he will investigate innovative sensors and readout electronics for Cosmological surveys. He will collaborate on electro-optic measurements of stimuli on sensors on the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope at BNL.

"My education at Mount Union has helped me earn this incredible opportunity because I have learned invaluable skills such as critical thinking, how to work both independently and with others to solve complex problems and public speaking skills that I will use in my professional career,” Winiecki said. “Additionally, I have had exceptional professors that have guided me through my academic career here to help open doors to research opportunities such as this."

Winiecki is also captain of the Mount Union men’s soccer team and will graduate in December 2018.  After his internship, he plans to attend graduate school and eventually earn his Ph.D. in physics.
