Nearly 480 Graduates Celebrated at 180th Mount Union Commencement Ceremonies
May 09, 2026ALLIANCE — Approximately 479 graduate and undergraduate students participated in the University of Mount Union’s 180th Commencement Ceremony held Saturday, May 10 in the Peterson Field House of the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
The day began with celebrating the new graduate alumni in the morning and the undergraduate students in the afternoon. Thousands packed the Field House with the event livestreamed worldwide to those unable to attend in person.
Mount Union Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. William Cunion welcomed the graduates and their families at each ceremony. Following Cunion, University President Greg King ’89 offered remarks and called out the successful Mount Union student-athletes who were unable to attend due to playing in their respective postseasons. Those graduates will receive their degrees at a special ceremony on Monday, May 11.

King then introduced Senior Class President Emily Krizner of Wickliffe, Ohio. Krizner, a double major in biology and Spanish—who was also a member of the University Honors program and named the 2026 Outstanding Senior—discussed taking the time to step back and notice the true value of a college education beyond the classroom.
“When I recognized the value of the intersection between disciplines, obtaining an education became more than mastery in one field, but rather an understanding of how all fields strengthen each other,” she said. “Once we are able to notice, we can pay attention, and it is through that attention that real learning happens.”
“As we move into our post-Mount Union lives, I encourage all of you to utilize the skills that our education has given to us, not only to notice, but to pay attention,” Krizner added. “To continue to learn with curiosity and an open mind. To embrace new perspectives. To be attentive to the beauty, heartbreak, sorrow, and joy that come with becoming ‘more fully human.’”
Following the confirmation of degrees, King, an alumnus himself, welcomed the graduates to the ranks of Mount Union alumni at each ceremony, encouraging them to continue to be involved with the University.
“Today, you join the generations of University of Mount Union students who have gone before you,” King said. “Like them, your relationship with Mount Union does not end here today. I am confident that all you have learned and experienced here at Mount Union will light your way as you continue your life’s journey.”
