Professor Michael Kachilla Named 2018 Great Teacher

April 24, 2018

Chad Johnson and Michael KachillaALLIANCE, Ohio—The University of Mount Union has named Professor Michael Kachilla the 2018 Great Teacher. Kachilla, associate professor of economics, accounting and business administration, was presented the award Tuesday, April 24 at Mount Union's annual Senior Recognition and Honors Convocation.

A member of the Mount Union faculty since 2009, Kachilla currently serves on the University’s Committee on Athletics. He earned a bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University before completing graduate work in the Marine Corps University in the areas of Command and Staff College and the School of Advanced Warfighting. He earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Ohio University.

“Professor Kachilla goes above and beyond the normal duties as a professor and advisor to make sure you are getting the most out of your education, no matter how unique your situation or life,” one student nominator said.

“Taking Professor Kachilla's classes helped me realize I was on the right path,” said another student nominator. “His love for business wore off on me, and I couldn't be more thankful! When I struggled with an assignment, he would help me until I felt I knew the material so well that I could give a lecture on it. Every time I see him on campus, Professor Kachilla always manages to say hello regardless of what he is doing. Without taking his business courses, I don't know if I would be so certain of my future as I am now.”

The Great Teacher Award, initiated in 1962, is sponsored by the Alumni Association and recognizes excellence in teaching – the foundation upon which the reputation of Mount Union has been built.

Kachilla was chosen as this year’s Great Teacher by a selection committee consisting of the officers of the senior class, the two past recipients of the Great Teacher Award, and the president and immediate past president of the Alumni Association.
