April 29, 2026

Cunion HeadshotWASHINGTON, DC — Dr. Bill Cunion, vice president for academic affairs at the University of Mount Union, has been selected as a member of the eighth cohort of The Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB) Institute for Leadership and Governance in Higher Education.

According to its website, the AGB Institute is designed for innovative, adaptive leaders who have a passion for higher education, a drive to serve as a college or university president and a commitment to shaping the future of the sector.

Cunion joins 28 other leaders in higher education as part of this cohort, and is the only representative from the state of Ohio. He is also the second individual from Mount Union to be selected for the AGB Institute, following President Greg King’s involvement in the third cohort in 2021.

“After participating in the AGB Institute, I can vouch firsthand for the program’s impact in further developing and supporting leadership in higher education,” said King. “Bill is a fantastic representative of both the core values of Mount Union and what it means to be a leader in this space, and I am excited for him to share this unique experience.”

Cunion taught a range of courses in American government in the Department of Political Science from 2003-2014. He served as chair of the Department of Political Science as well as its internship director and was the recipient of Mount Union’s prestigious Great Teacher Award in 2006. Additionally, he served as the associate academic dean from 2010 to 2014.

“We are in a challenging time in higher education, and I am looking forward to learning from the best leaders in this sector,” Cunion said. “I view this opportunity as an added benefit to aid in keeping Mount Union on an innovative path.”

A native of Massillon, Cunion earned a B.A. degree in political science from Xavier University, an M.A. degree in political science from Ohio University, and a Ph.D. degree in political science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
