October 08, 2026

Julie ButlerSTARKVILLE, Mississippi — Utilizing her expertise in machine learning, Dr. Julie Butler, assistant professor of physics and data science at the University of Mount Union, will aid Dr. Benjamin Crider of Mississippi State University (MSU) in national research on unstable nuclei and neutron behavior.

Crider received a $1.35 million award from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to support this impactful research and is one of only 21 researchers selected to help advance the study of physics. Butler will work alongside Crider and Ron Unz, project manager at MSU’s Institute for Clean Energy Technology.

The grant will last for five years and, while there are not currently any plans, Butler aims to involve Mount Union undergrads in this important work as much as possible throughout the scope of the project.
