CLEVELAND – Learning from deputy marshals and sitting in on court cases, Kyle Kress ’26, national security and intelligence analysis and political science double major, wants to pursue a career in government with the U.S. Marshals Service after his internship in Cleveland in the Spring of 2025.

“I learned about the U.S. Marshals Service from Dr. Grossman, who was encouraging a student to intern with them a year before my internship,” said Kress. “I met and worked with a variety of government officials such as deputies, prosecutors, and judges, but my favorite interaction was with Kurt Everett, my supervisor at the internship site.”
While many internships hand out easy and unrelated professional tasks to students, Kress explained that he was able to enter the field directly – sitting in court, listening to the cases being tried and learning from each, touring other government buildings like the FBI Cleveland office, and creating files and issuing warrants.
“Kurt made it his task to teach the interns what working for the U.S. Marshals Service was really about – not just handling phone calls,” said Kress. “This internship helped me gain a different perspective of the world; I came out of the bubble I had been living in and learned not to take everything my parents provided me with for granted.”
Building relationships outside of class is important for students’ professional careers, but the relationships students build with their professors are the stepping stone to meaningful careers. Therefore, Kress values the one he built with Dr. Michael Grossman, professor of political science. Not only did Grossman speak to Kress about this internship, but helped him transfer back when he first left Mount Union.
“Dr. Grossman not only cares about his students’ academic journeys, but he also cares about us as a whole; he made my transition back to Mount Union easy and would check in on me during my dad’s illness and helped me stay on track for graduation,” said Kress.
Kress came to Mount Union wanting to earn a degree, and he will graduate from Mount Union with a large support system and a career. Learn how you can build a career in government with the guidance from faculty in our Department of Social Sciences.
