Spinell Named National Collegiate Esports Director of the Year

ALLIANCE, Ohio — The National Association of Esports Coaches and Directors (NAECAD) announced that Derek Spinell, director and head coach of the University of Mount Union’s esports program, has been named the National College Esports Director of the Year for 2020-2021.

According to the NAECAD release, a member of the Mount Union esports program said this about Spinell, “He runs the stream, manages all players, is there for all three teams during practice days, and consistently goes above and beyond for his players day in and day out. His leadership skills permeate through all three teams he coaches, and he is an excellent role model for all players that play under the Mount Union Esports banner. Whether it's being a friend to players, preparing for tough matchups, making sure the student athletes’ grades are where they need to be, getting us the best gear possible, or being there for a pep talk mid-match... Derek does it all.”

Spinell earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication technology from The Ohio State University where he was a collegiate esports student leader. In addition to his collegiate experience, Derek also serves as an events contractor for Major League Gaming. A position he has held since 2013.

The University of Mount Union esports program is currently seeking incoming freshman and transfer students for Fall 2021 scholarship opportunities for the following teams and positions within the program: League of Legends, Overwatch, Rocket League, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, and Valorant, as well as livestream production, commentating, and team management. Players of all skill levels will be considered.
