University of Mount Union Student Chapter Receives Merit Award from SHRM

July 15, 2021

ALLIANCE, Ohio – On Friday, July 9, 2021, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) awarded a 2020-2021 Merit Award designation to the University of Mount Union SHRM Student Chapter for providing superior growth and development opportunities to its student members.

The SHRM Student Chapter Merit Award program encourages the development of more effective student chapters and distinguishes outstanding activities and projects. Chapters are recognized based on operations, chapter programming and professional development of members, support of the human resource profession, and SHRM engagement.

“The members of our SHRM student chapters represent the next generation of HR leaders, and it’s critical to highlight the instrumental role they play in SHRM’s success,” said Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, SHRM president and CEO. “The hard work of The Mount Union Student SHRM chapter shows the future of the profession is, indeed, in good hands. I applaud their accomplishments and ability to foster innovative programming, development and interest in HR as we navigate changing workplaces.”

SHRM student chapters have the opportunity to earn an award based on the number of activities they complete during the merit award cycle, the most recent one of which lasted from May 1, 2020, to April 30, 2021.

The Mount Union SHRM student chapter is in its second year of operation and has distinguished itself by receiving the Merit Award twice. Despite limits imposed on in-person meetings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the chapter continued to hold monthly meetings, virtually, in person and in hybrid format. They completed several educational and development activities by bringing in speakers to campus virtually and participating in professional meetings online. Their community service project was a personal hygiene product collection drive for the Alliance Domestic Violence Shelter.

The 2020-2021 exemplary chapter leadership team was comprised of the following:

  • President – Kathryn Brodbeck ’22, a human resource management major of Hudson, Ohio
  • Vice President – Taylor Breyley ’21 a marketing, management, and human resources management graduate of North Canton, Ohio
  • Secretary - Morgan Boswell ’21, a human resource management and marketing graduate of New London, Ohio
  • Treasurer - Danielle Ester ’21, a human resource management major of Copley, Ohio
