Since claiming its first national championship in 1993, the Purple Raider football program has continued to evolve as a team, increasing its number of NCAA Division III National Championships to 13, expanding its visibility throughout the country, and growing its roster to well over 200 student-athletes. A facility that could provide ample space to accommodate the entire team and staff would certainly be a positive for the program.
Thus, a 5,600-square foot building, funded by a $2 million dollar gift from Dom and Karen Capers, is being planned. Ground has been broken for the facility, which will feature a team meeting and film room that can be split into smaller rooms along with offices and meeting spaces.
Because Mount Union’s participation in Division III athletics does not permit us to award athletic scholarships, it is important to show students, in ways they and their families can feel, that Purple Raider athletics is committed to their improvement, performance, and success in competition. Great facilities, like the Capers Football Coaching Center, will support recruitment of good athletes without the inducement of scholarship dollars.
